Welcome back to Sage Space!
As we get older, it often feels like getting a good night's sleep becomes more of a mystery than ever. It's the foundation of our day and a frequent topic of conversation—"Did you sleep well?" "How did you sleep?" We know the struggle, so we're here to share a few tips that might help you catch those elusive extra zzz's. And here's a fun fact to ponder: the average person has four to six dreams every night, even if they don’t remember them!
Wishing you a restful night's sleep and a wonderful week ahead!

This week…
Avoid Screens!
Studies show two or more hours of screen time in the evening can seriously disrupt the melatonin surge needed to fall asleep. Consider turning off all electronic devices at least one hour before bed, at a minimum. Instead try reading a book, listening to calming music, or doing some other type of relaxing activity.
Start a sleep ritual
When you were a kid, you might remember your parents would read you a story and tuck you into bed each night. This comforting routine helped you fall asleep. As an adult, having a bedtime routine can have a similar impact. These rituals let your body and mind know that it's time to wind down for sleep.
Try starting a nighttime routine yourself! You might drink a glass of warm milk, take a bath, or listen to soothing music to relax before bed - all could help give you that better night’s sleep.
Don’t watch the clock
Are you constantly checking the clock when you are trying to fall asleep? It’s probably hurting your sleep, not helping!
Researchers from Indiana University discovered in a recent sleep study of nearly 5,000 people that watching the clock while trying to fall asleep made participants more likely to have more trouble falling asleep.
If you find yourself looking at your clock or checking the time on your phone in the middle of the night, try facing your clock in the other direction or putting your phone in a drawer to prevent these tempting nighttime time checks.
Fun fact!
Did you know you burn calories in your sleep? The average person burns 50 calories an hour, making up an average of 400 calories for 8 hours of sleep. That’s more calories than going for a 4 mile walk!
This is because it's part of your basal metabolic rate to do basic functions such as breathing, digestion and keeping your heart beating while asleep.

“Always end the day with a positive thought. No matter how hard things were, tomorrow’s a fresh opportunity to make it better.” - Harry Dean Stanton
