Preparing for a Peaceful Holiday

 Welcome back to Sage Space!

Preparing for the Holiday Season with Joy

Well, I managed to get the tree and Christmas decorations up last weekend! My kids make fun of me, but if there were a disaster and we had to evacuate in the middle of the night, (after grabbing the kids and pets!!) - I’d probably be clutching my Christmas ornaments! They’re a mismatched collection of treasures: clothespin reindeer, pinecone creations, school-year mementos, souvenirs from vacations, and little nods to colleges and sports teams. Every year, we add more, and yes, the tree is officially crowded. But can you ever really have too many ornaments? I don’t think so.

Do you look forward to the holidays but also feel the stress creeping in? You’re not alone. The key to a joyful holiday season is pacing yourself. This week’s Sage Space addresses some simple ways to reduce stress and make the most of this time.

Wishing you and yours a wonderful Holiday season.

Best,

This Week: Preparing for a Peaceful Holiday

Prioritize

Focus on a few meaningful traditions rather than trying to do it all. Whether it’s baking cookies, attending a concert, or enjoying lights in your neighborhood, choose what brings you the most happiness.

Delegate

Ask for help with hosting, shopping, or decorating. Sharing responsibilities lightens your load and creates opportunities for connection.

Plan Restful Moments

Schedule quiet times to recharge. Whether it’s reading by the fire, sipping tea, or taking a walk, these moments can help you stay grounded.

Acknowledging Loss and Finding Comfort

For those reflecting on loved ones who are no longer with us, the holidays can bring mixed feelings. Here are some ways to honor those feelings while finding joy in the season:

  • Create a Tribute: Light a candle, hang a special ornament, or prepare a favorite dish to remember a loved one.

  • Reach Out: Connecting with friends, family, or community groups can ease feelings of loneliness. Consider inviting someone else who might be feeling the same way to share a meal or activity.

  • Give Back: Volunteering or donating to a cause close to your heart can bring a sense of purpose.

A touch of Holiday History:

Did you know that "White Christmas," sung by Bing Crosby, is the best-selling Christmas song of all time, with over 50 million copies sold?

The first official public menorah lighting in the U.S. happened in 1979 on the White House lawn, initiated by President Jimmy Carter. This began a tradition that continues today.

Fun Fact: Even something as simple as brushing your teeth with your non-dominant hand can boost neuroplasticity. It challenges your brain to adapt to a new way of doing a familiar task.
