Physical and Mental Recovery

Welcome to Sage Space!

We know life throws us curveballs — on Sunday morning I twisted and fractured my ankle loading old clothes and coats in my car that I was planning to drop at our local Market Street Mission / Goodwill. It seems even charitable acts can come with unexpected challenges!! This incident is a stark reminder that accidents can happen at any time, even on a quiet and sunny Sunday morning.

This week’s edition focuses on how to manage such incidents, emphasizing both physical and mental recovery strategies, and the pivotal role of nutrition.

Have a great week!

 The Healing Process:

Physical Response and Recovery: Immediately following an injury, our bodies initiate inflammation as a defense mechanism. It’s our body’s immune response --equivalent of a personal 911 call to our immune system to send in the “first responders” to secure the scene and assess the damage. The body also makes sure this is actually painful to avoid us doing something silly to injure it further!!  This natural response brings essential healing elements to the injury site, protecting it and starting the healing process. Although it can be uncomfortable, understanding that this is a part of healing can help us appreciate our body’s efforts to recover.

Mental and Emotional Well-being: An injury isn’t just a physical setback. Can you remember a time when even a small injury impacted your life? Being more vulnerable and open to and asking for help is critical to get through recovery. We all want to be superheroes or our own life, but don’t hesitate to ask for help—even superheroes need a sidekick sometimes. Sharing your experience and accepting assistance helps to strengthen bonds with our family, friends and community.

Nutrition and Healing: Nutrition plays a vital role in how effectively our bodies heal from injuries. Remember Sage Space #1 when we talked about staying hydrated? It’s even more critical with an injury. Also, anti-inflammatory foods like greens, and berries help reduce swelling and accelerate recovery—think of them as your tasty, natural healers.

The Importance of Sleep: We all know sleep is crucial to our health and healing process, as it allows our body to repair and regenerate tissues. Make sure to get plenty of rest to support your body’s natural recovery capabilities---your body will thank you for every extra Z. Is there a new Netflix series you’ve been wanting to binge or book you need to finish? Now’s the time to take a breath and be ok feeling sidelined.

Closing Thoughts: Recovery is a journey that requires patience, proper care, a supportive community, and your most comfortable sweatpants! As we wobble along our paths to healing, let’s stay connected and uplift each other. If you have any recovery stories or tips, please share them with us at info@mywisdom.io

Quote of the Day:

“Don’t let aging get you down. It’s too hard to get back up.” – John Wagner

Ask Puddy:

Dear Friends of the Wisdom Community,

I have been talking with our wisdom community about their "healthy eating habits" growing up. It really brought back a lot of nostalgia. Remember when there was a saying "You are what you eat."

My mother took that quote very seriously.

Well, we had liver every Thursday and of course, it was always served with fried bacon. And then the much-heralded Christmas morning breakfast before gift opening was kidney stew with waffles. (glad that that meal was only once a year).

So today I contemplate, am I really what I eat or ate?

Have a good week.

Fondly,

Puddy, puddy@mywisdom.io
