Foods that Help With Weight Loss
A big thank you to everyone who's sent their well-wishes for my ankle recovery. I'm happy to report that I'm on the mend and getting excited for the unofficial beginning of summer, Memorial Day weekend, which is just around the corner. With the warm weather coming, many of us may be thinking about how to shed those stubborn few pounds that crept up over the winter.
Inspired by a recent article I read from AARP by Nissa Simon on foods to help you lose weight, we wanted to share Wisdom’s top picks! https://www.aarp.org/health/healthy-living

What foods should we be grabbing?
Eggs: Eggs and egg whites are incredibly effective at curbing appetite due to their high protein content. They keep you feeling fuller for longer and have a low glycemic index, promoting a gradual rise in blood sugar to help manage hunger efficiently. Despite their delicate shells, eggs are surprisingly strong. The shape of an egg is a marvel of engineering—it's one of nature's most innovative designs allowing it to withstand pressure from all directions. Go eggs!
Cottage cheese is an excellent friend for weight loss, loaded with protein that keeps you full longer yet low in fat. Although often left behind, cottage cheese was once a luxury in 19th-century America, gracing upscale menus often paired with extravagant additions like truffles and caviar! Well, a more practical idea would be swapping cottage cheese for sour cream on baked potatoes—lots of protein and calcium without those extra calories.
Oats: Oats are filling due to their high fiber content, particularly the soluble fiber beta-glucan, which helps regulate appetite. Remember those Quaker Oats commercials from childhood? Turns out, those folks were onto something long before the term 'superfoods' became trendy. Oats also have more tricks up their sleeve, they've been used in skincare, soothing eczema and relieving itchy, inflamed skin with their natural properties.
Apples: Always an obvious choice, these crunchy delights are high in fiber, which helps to keep you full longer. Interesting to note that a medium apple has about 5 grams of fiber and is 85% water, helping to stave off hunger pangs and keep us hydrated. Also, Apples float because they're 25% air! Great for bobbing at fall festivals—just like the old days!
Avocados: While they are higher in calories, avocados are filled with fiber and healthy fats that help you feel full. They're a great addition to salads or as a spread on toast. Did you know avocados were used as a form of currency by the Aztec’s?
Leafy Greens (Spinach, Kale, Swiss Chard): Low in calories and high in fiber, leafy greens are a powerhouse in any diet focused on weight loss. They're also packed with nutrients and minerals. Spinach, for instance, was used by medieval artists to create green pigment for their paintings. Now, that's what we call a multi-talented veggie!
Watch Out for Healthy Food Traps! Watch out for foods that can cleverly disguise extra calories. Packaged salads might seem like a healthy choice, but the dressings and toppings can be laden with hidden calories. Similarly, relying too heavily on artificial sweeteners may seem harmless, but studies suggest they could be a double-edged sword, potentially fueling sugar cravings and appetite over
time. https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/artificial-sweeteners-sugar-free-but-at-what-cost-201207165030

Ask Puddy!
Hi, when I’m really hungry my personal champion is a beautiful plate of ripe Jersey tomatoes with fresh mozzarella cheese, crisp red onions, and some fresh basil. Drizzle that with some olive oil and balsamic vinegar, and you have a delicious snack that really fills you up.
I also admit I love an ice cream sandwich…can I sneak that on the list? What's your favorite? Would love to hear from you.
